I heard a loooong time ago, someone pronounce it IM-oh-gene, but I think it's prettier IM-oh-gen.

Same problem with hegemony. A letter G followed by a vowel pronounced with the tongue over half-way up the mouth makes a J sound; low vowels give a G sound. ImoJen, therefore. Gareth and Jill are helpful mnemonics.

My mom taught me that g followed by i or e has the soft, or j sound; usually. Y :)
