[Facts] Re: Aislin - pron. "Ashleen" or "Ashlyn"?
in reply to a message by Kate
Thanks, I'm glad that my preferred pronunciation does exist after all!Can anybody tell me the reason for the two pronunciations - I know it's the accent that makes the 'i' long, but why put the accent there in the first place? Is the "Ashleen" pronunciation maybe a diminutive of the "Ashlyn" one? Or have they always co-existed as variants of each other?Thank you all!

My guess would be that Aislín is just a variant of Aislin. An -ín ending is a feminine or diminutive form. I don't think it would be strictly a diminutive form because then it would have to be Aislinín or something.

Thank you, I've been wondering about this for ages and it looks like you've cleared it up!
