There was a pop song about 25 years ago I suppose, perhaps longer, either called Avalon or about an Avalon person. I never heard it, but I did meet a woman whose daughter (now deep in her 20s) was named Avalon after the song because it was absolutely the only name her father would even consider. They were Irish. I found it weird, but as pop-song names go, it could have been worse.
Roxy Music
The song, and the album - which had "More Than This" on it too.
*sigh* I must be getting old, because I'm totally boggled (and a little sad) that out of all these responses, only one person associates Roxy Music, and you can't even remember the song.
But I guess that is good news for any other pop-culture name obsessions people might have. They're forgotten so quickly, and it becomes just a name.

It's worse! I never knowingly heard the song ... but my informant's DH clearly loved it quite excessively. In fact, now I'm trying to remember any Roxy Music song, and failing.

Possibly the prettiest pop song, ever. =)

I think it sounds more like a company name than a person's name, but I did meet an Avalyn this summer... Not really a name I would use.
I don't think it's weird. I wouldn't use it, but it's pretty.
I kind of like it and I don't think most people would find it weird. I think it fits in pretty well with current name trends. I mean it does start with "Ava" haha :)
I like Avalon. It happens to be the name that's been on my list for the longest amount of time. I don't think it's all that unusual, considering the crazy names a lot of people make up and then bestow on their children. The only thing I'd be concerned about is people pronouncing it like the name Ava, because it's so popular at the moment.
I think it needs a decidedly feminine middle name because Avalon isn't very obviously feminine.

I think it's kind of neat because I love Arthurian names. The problem now though is it's also the name of a car. :/
I don't know if people would really think it was a weird name. Have you seen the made-up stuff people are naming their kids these days? :P But a lot of people might think of the car and not know about the mythical place.
I'd try pairing it with something elegant. Like:
Avalon Claire (ooh, love this!)
Avalon Eira
Avalon Juliet
Avalon Lydie

I kinda like it. It reminds me of Anne Of Avonlea. I don't see why people would think it's any weirder than anything else. Combos:
Avalon Elizabeth
Avalon Eloise
Avalon Ursel
Avalon Catherine
Avalon Winter
Avalon Quinn (likely too unisex)
Avalon Jane
Avalon Diane
Edited cause I typed Anne of Avalon instead of Anne of Avonlea.
