[Surname] Engst
Would anyone happen to know the ethnic backround of the surname Engst? I'm not so concerned with the meaning, although that would be great too. It's my great-grandmother's maiden name, and although I know quite a lot about my great-grandfather's ancestry, I know nothing about her's. Thank you very much for anything!

I can't find ENGST in my books, but there is ENGSTER. This is a habitional name referring to someone who lives in or near an especialley narrow spot.
Another thing that came to my mind was the name HENGST; the H may have been dropped for some reason. But this is no more than an educated guess.

Thank you Andy! That's very interesting.
Engst is German as you can see at http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/engst.html and http://tinyurl.com/3geoec3. I don't know the etymology.
Thank you Marc! I sort of figured it was German, but I've been wrong before. I appreciate the links. =)
