[Opinions] Re: Artemis?

I think non-namenerds would assume it was a male name, but other than that it's nice. Too myth-y for me, but not a bad, unusable name.

Someone said to me on another board it was a male name. Why are people making this connection, because it ends in -is?
also, and this is maybe lame, but on Sailor Moon the cat character Atemis was male as well.
Because of Artemis Fowl, I think. Eoin Colfer wrote a series of books about Artemis Fowl, "teenage mastermind", who was very much male.

Sad that a recent book overrides thousands of years of history. But I guess it could work on a man as well.
Heh, I remember picking up that book in sixth grade and being so disappointed the protagonist wasn't female. I was pretty miffed and it killed my interest, so I returned it. (This was during my brief "I only want to read books with strong female leads" phase).
Though I now like books with protagonists of either gender, Artemis as a gender-bending name still grinds my gears.

That's why I've always thought of this more as a male name than female.
