Adam Kirchner, a 29-year old editor-in-chief of a small magazine, is vacationing in Germany with the goal of researching Kirchner genealogy. Unfortunately, Adam’s plan goes awry; he is injured in a bicycling accident while traveling in the German countryside. He is lucky to suffer no more than some bruises and a sprained wrist, but he is most fortunate to meet Hannelore, a 28-year old resident physician. As Hannelore patches Adam up, he convinces her to meet him for coffee in the evening. The couple hits it off, and is married in a private ceremony three months later.
Year 1: Hannelore and Adam have just settled into a home in rural Germany; she practices medicine nearby and he runs an online newspaper. Hannelore soon learns that she has conceived a honeymoon baby. Adam could not be happier, and so he prepares a beautiful nursery in the smallest bedroom of their farmhouse. After baby Beata birth on May 19th, Adam holds and rocks his daughter as much as he is able.

Year 2: The Kirchners are the epitome of a happy family. Beata is a beautiful baby, the spitting image of her mother’s looks and intelligence. When Beata celebrates her first birthday, the Kirchners plan a massive party. Adam’s parents and younger sister fly in from Massachusetts to meet baby Beata for the first time. They are just as enamored with Beata as her parents are.

Year 3: On June 7th, Beata becomes a big sister, because Hannelore gives birth to baby Elisa. Beata is thrilled with the new addition and loves to greet her baby sister with kisses. Beata moves into a bigger bedroom, and Elisa settles into the small farmhouse nursery. When Adam checks on his sleeping infant daughter, he is surprised by the close resemblance she and Beata bear.

Year 4: Hannelore confides in Adam that she has always wanted to adopt. He agrees that he would love to bring an abandoned child into their home, and so the family pursues an adoption from Russia. On August 4th, the Kirchners bring home 3-year old Anya. One month later, the family celebrates Anya’s fourth birthday, and Adam’s parents fly in to greet the new arrival. Grandma and Grandpa are shocked to see that little Anya looks just like Adam.

Year 5: With three daughters and a wife, Adam feels slightly outnumbered. However, he is content with the size of his beautiful family. But in March, Hannelore approaches Adam with big news – she is pregnant again! The 20 week ultrasound confirms that the unborn child is a boy, and so Adam paints the nursery blue. On November 12th, baby Adam is born. Junior has Dad’s eyes, but Mom’s hair.

Year 6: The Kirchners are not devout, but Adam knows that his parents are highly religious Lutherans. When Easter rolls around, he and the family travel to Boston to visit and celebrate the holiday. It is his children’s first trip to the United States, and Grandma and Grandpa’s infectious humor and love make the trip memorable. The only downside – traveling with five-month old baby Adam. That child has a set of lungs!

Year 7: Anya loves being a big sister to three siblings, but sometimes she feels alienated as the only adopted child. Happily, Hannelore and Adam plan to adopt for the second time. In October, the Kirchners welcome 10-month olds Karina and Ivan. These blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauties have congenital heart defects, but Hannelore’s expertise as a physician allows her to find the best care for the family’s newest additions. On December 28th, the twins celebrate their first birthday, happy and healthy.

Natasha, the eldest sister, is healthy, but her younger sister Marya requires leg braces in order to walk. Adam and Hannelore fall in love with the sisters and plan to adopt them. In July, the Kirchners bring 9-year old Natasha and 8-year old Marya home. Anya is thrilled to have two playmates that are her age.

Sadly, Adam is an inexpert cyclist, and he manages to collide with a tree. He suffers a nasty headache, three cracked ribs, and a fractured tibia. Thankfully, he will be fine eventually, and he uses his injuries as an excuse to miss work. Instead, he spends his days entertaining Ava, who is not yet walking.

Bruno’s birthparents, Erik and Andrea, are 23 years old and newly married. They cannot care for Bruno’s medical conditions, but they acknowledge that Hannelore and Adam can. The families agree to keep in touch.

This year also marks the 70th birthday of Adam’s mother, so the entire Kirchner family travels to Boston to visit her. While in the United States, the Kirchner family, Grandma, and Grandpa also visit New York City, Philadelphia, and Disney World. At the end of the month-long trip, the Kirchners return to Germany with a promise to visit again soon.

Adam grants conditional permission: if the Kirchners want a pet, it must be small. Very small. They purchase a gerbil named Stinky. Even Adam admits that it’s sort of cute.

He regrets his decision not to visit more frequently with his wife and children. Adam’s mother tries to comfort him, explaining that the death was completely unexpected, but she is also shaken by this sudden show of mortality. She moves into her daughter’s home in Maine in order to be close to family. Adam quits the pursuit of a second degree.

Natasha is grounded for three months, and she barely speaks to her father for that entire period.

Although Hannelore arranges for the best treatment for her daughter, her efforts are futile. The cancer continues to spread, and Natasha is given no hope of survival. In her final months, Natasha is able to finish high school and reconcile with her father. It is he who holds her in his arms as she takes her last breath. The entire family is deeply saddened, but Marya is devastated. She and Anya become especially close in the months following Natasha’s death.
