Zella met Hamilton when she was at Yale. Or rather, at a protest at Yale. Or rather, he was holding a blackjack while she was burning the flag at a protest at Yale. It quickly became apparent that Hamilton was still stymied by antique notions that one must not beat a lady over the head with a blunt object. He asked her to come quietly. When she refused, he asked her to coffee. She accepted.
Zella explained, at the cafe, that she was just about to graduate with a doctoral degree in child psychology. She had chosen this path because, in spite of what everyone assumed of her, she just really liked kids. Hamilton admitted that he had become an officer of the peace for about the same reason-- growing up in the bad bit of Boston, he had seen a lot of violence. He wanted to protect future generations of little kids from that.
They really, really liked each other. In spite of their ideological differences, they fell deeply in love and married in the winter, because Zella thought spring and summer weddings were cliche...
