Both Piero and Nico are now happily married - Nico has married Anna, a young Austrian woman, daughter of a rich sculptor, who was visiting the suitor, after falling madly in love with her. Pierino and Kora get along nicely, though they have produced no issue despite having now been married for some time. Lucrezia, however, has had another son, Bettino. The family have been keeping a low profile, as they have been accused of loaning to politicians in Florence, with whom war has broken out.
