The place you are talking about is called Schleiden-Herhahn, halfway between Luxemburg and Dortmund (roughly). So it's the Rhineland rather than the Palatinate.
It's not in my book of German place-names, so this is just guessing:
Her (Old High German "heri"): army
Hahn: rooster
