I suspect that this name is Indian, i.e., Hindu. Premnath is a Hindu name, and this looks like another spelling of same. An African- American connection would be hard to explain, unless the individual is of mixed ancestry, or is a member of one of those cults that adopt Hindu or Sanskrit names.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably have to change the last name now, since people will realize that my character isn't Indian, and go Huh?. Ah, well.
Most African-Americans are of mixed descent. I don't know if this guy was part Indian, but he could have been.
