Bain is from the Gaelic bán, meaning "white", referring to hair colour. "The Bains of Caithness according to the Book of Mackay (p.50)are descended from John Bain, son of Neil Neilson, son of Donald(Mackay)murdered in 1370." (George Fraser Black, "The Surnames of Scotland")
