I found it on a French site: Most common in Normandy; Le Mieux also exists; to trace the origin back to the word mieux (which meant 'best in the medieval language) seems problematic; it may derive from a place-name: Saint-Martin-de-Mieux in Calvados, or Mieux à Canteloup in La Manche, or one of several other place names in Normandie.
