Re: Origin of Dutch Surnames

Van der Wiel is a Dutch surname which literally means 'from the pond'.

The surname could also possibly refer to the Dutch word 'wiel', which means "wheel" in English. As such, the surname would literally mean "of the wheel", probably referring to an ancestor who made a living out of making and repairing wheels for carriages.
