Have you any examples of this as a surname? I'm doing some guessing here, but considering the possibility that it is a female title in some Arab or Muslim societies. Hanim is Turkish for 'lady', doubtless from the Persian/Turkic Khanum, female equivalent of Khan.
Just a thought. An example of Hanem following a male given name would disprove this idea.

Yes, a girl of Ukrainian and Middle Eastern origin. Upon looking through records, I found a male with the first name Ibrahim who had the name.
That's that idea out the window.
