It comes from the village of Colston Basset in Nottinghmshire (although earlier it was in Leicestershire), previously recorded as Colestone Basset, Colestune and Coleton. The village name means Cole's town (walled/enclosed settlement), either from Old English col or Norse Kol, "coal" (used as a personal name or name element).
