Quite easy to explain: this surname means "judge". It is quite common in USA, it ranks 3262. Not too bad!

Many Irish names were translated to their English meaning. Judge in Irish is Mac an Bhreithiún (son of the judge which also appears in the name Breheny ...judges were very important in Ancient Ireland and they had a very advanced judicial system ... known as Brehonic Law
