Does anyone have any idea what MASSOT could mean? A relative of mine married a Cuban with MASSOT as the surname.

It's French, but it may be Catalan (of Spain) as well. The favoured explanation is that it derives from the name Thomas -
(Tho)massot, "Big Thomas".
