My Irish surname book (Irish Surnames {SLOINNTE NA h-ÉREANN} by Seán de Bhulbh who I translate as Sean Butler) does not show any entry for McGriff ...the book is based on all currently existing (1997) names in Irish phone books.
As a result, I'd suspect as Jim Young says that its a transliteration of another name ...

Your "Sloinnte" sounds like an interesting work, Sean. Watch out for a query directed your way.
By the way, I'm sure de Bhulbh is an Irish version of the surname Woulfe.

Yes of course ... it's even on the book somewhere ...not sure where the 'Butler' thing came from ...most likely the bottle of beer I was drinking ...
