Origin of Cherwatiy

I have a friend and her mother's last name is Cherwatiy. She told me she never met her mother, nor her family, and both me and her want to know the origin of her former surname. I think it is Eastern European, but I'm not sure, sorry.

The origin is Polish Czerwaty. Now maybe someone else can tell us what it means.

Czerw, in Polish means worm, although I do not know if it has anything to do with this surname. Also, czerwony means red.
