Surname
Hi Does anyone know the origin of the name Dworanowski? I have heard many stories. First, I was told that it was shortened to Dworan when my grandparents came to Canada from Austria around 1911. Then I heard that it was mispelled and it was orginally Dvoran. I am confused because if it was shorted from Dworanowski to Dworan, then why are there Dworan's in Austria and United States? When I search Dworanowski nothing comes up. This would really help me out a lot.
Thank you

The original name would seem to be Czech Dvořan or Slovak Dvoran. Dworan could be an Austrian adaptation since is pronounced in German. The etymology is probably Slavic dvor (dwor in Polish) 'court, manor, yard'.

Thank you. This will help in my search. I do not know anything about my family roots.

Dworanowski and Dworanowicz are Polish surnames (both extremely rare).
