Heard/ Hurd: an English Occupational name for the tender of animals, normally a shepherd or cow herder

Agreed on Hurd as an English surname. But it may be that Hurdbacher has been shortened to Hurd in the English-speaking world. Hurdbacher looks like it's from a place name, Hurdbach, whose last component means "stream". I haven't found a plce of that name, and I'm not sure that the surname is extant in Germany. Perhaps the spelling has been altered.
