last names
Am curious about the last names of my granparents. One name I'm looking for is Tokaruck (from the Ukrain), the other is Wondolowski (from Poland). With no birth certificates for either set, I'm running into a brick wall at every turn. If some one can help please contact me at the above e-mail address. Please, I don't want to "chat" I'm as serious as I can be. Thanking you in advance for any help that you can be. Thanks

The name Tokar is from the Carpathian Mountain area of Southeastern Poland, once known as the Lemko Region. Before World War II it was home to a colorful Eastern Slavic ethnic group known as Lemkos, who are considered Ukrainians by most scholars but who have a distinct language, culture and history. Tokar means 'turner' (woodworker). This must be the origin of the name Tokaruck.

Vandalov is the closest I can find. It seems to be confined to Slovakia. The Slovak word vandal means 'vandal' (one who willfully destroys things), but the surname is more likely based on the name of the tribe. It could even mean 'the Andalusian', because the name of this part of Spain also derives from 'Vandal'. The name Andalovski also exists.
