Does anyone have any idea where the surname chowings/chowens might originate. We think France considering my ancestors with this surname lived in Devon but any other information would be useful.

Chowings/Chowens along with a bunch of other variants like Chown, Chowne, Chowen, Chone are thought to be from the Middle English given name Chun/Chunn whose origin is unknown.
