Hi Charls,sorry for a very long delay in getting back to you but I have never been able to find anything like the information you sent so I can only suppose that Thayers ,Theyer and other various spellings must have come from France Germany or Scandinavia ?

According to the Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland, Thayer is from Middle English the eir ‘the heir’, a variant of Ayre with fused definite article.
