Koszla
I have a friend who's last name is Koszla (kosh-la)... He said it was cut down from a longer name when his ancestors came from Poland. Koszla means Basket I believe .. so what would it be shortened from?

Koszla is a Polish surname, as is Kosz£a (that funny L again). Koszlaga, Koszlajda, Koszlak, and Koszlawski - all Polish surnames, but none of them common. I haven't a clue what any of them mean.

I tried a Polish translation site with 'Kosz' ...and got 'basket' or 'bin'. So maybe they all derive from basket-makers ...plausible ...not sure how likely?? We know the ending is simply a diminutive meaning essentially "son of" or "descended from".Any Slavic geniuses out there, please help!

It's not exactly a "funny L" ...
It's the next letter that comes in the alphabet. It looks like an L with a line through it. And it's pronunced like the English W.

Yes, but having to repeat that explanation every time a name comes up with that letter, nie dobrze.
