Without consulting a dictionary of surnames or place-names I would guess: (dweller in a) "long valley", someone frome a place by that name.

Agreed, and I would offer Langdale, in Cumbria, Northern England as the place. Slight change of spelling without loss of meaning. Langdale is a well known Northern English surname.
