Last name of a professor
I am interested in finding out the origin of the last name of my Spanish professor. After asking her what her name means, she has no clue and I have tried looking everywhere. Her last name is Llacuna. She is born and raised in Cuba, but has been here in the USA for 35 years. Anyone who can give me some info...I'll love you for life (-:

Llacuna not lake...(m)Llacuna doesn't mean 'lake', it is the Catalan word for 'lagoon'.
It is from the Latin word lacuna with the same meaning. Off course the two (lake and lagoon) are related, but they're not exactly the same.

Wow.....that's a doozy. You say she's Cuban? Try asking her again. It may be that her name is a variation on a last name used in a local dialect. That's just a guess.

Llacuna is a variant of "lago", lake. It comes from names of places
see also Llagunes, Llaguno.

Am I right in thinking that the initial double L is indicative of a Catalan rather than a Castilian surname?

yes, normally names that start with a double 'l' are Catalan, but also Catalan and Basque surnames are to be found in Spanish colonies, so this must be one of them.
