Surname Mosier
I am curious about the meaning of my last name Mosier. The only history I know about it is it was orginally spelled Moser and was changed when my ancestors came to the U.S. from Germany sometime in the 1800's.

There are more possible derivations of the German name Moser:
1. from various place-names like Moos or Moser (Bavaria, Austria),
2. same as Möser (O umlaut): "greengrocer" (from Middle Low German "mos" = cabbage, vegetables) or "mortar" from Middle Low German "moser, moyser") or again various place-names (usually containing the element "moos" = moss)
3. in a Jewish context it could be used as an equivalent to Moses
All of this is taken from:

Moser denotes someone who lived at a place called Mos or Moos. The name tells us that such a place was muddy, and is a common one. Mooser is another version of this surname. (All from Jean Tosti's website).
The surname Moser is orginally german but it has now spread throughout Europe: it comes from names of places that indicate
muddy places o even peat areas
