Harmer
My maiden name is Harmer. We never hear very much of them and I would be really interested to find out about it. I am English, but my Dad thinks it is French, although there are no French relatives in memory, but strangely my family all look quite alike and i often have people tell me i look French( whatever that might be!) so it does not seem unbelievable. Any info would be great. thanks

Harmer, English surname, usually from an old forename Hermer. This is made up of the Germanic words heri (army) and meri (famous).
Some Harmers originating in the south-east of England took their surname from a place-name, Harmere, now Harmere-Hall, in Sussex.

The Oxford Dictionary of Surnames (P.H.Reany, 1997) says, it is English indeed. Here the name is derived from the two Germanic elemtents "her(i)" (army) and "mar(i)" (famous).
