For one thing, there's a book about your surname and its variants, but it might be hard to get a copy:

Some variants:
Massengale
Masengale
Massingale
Masingale
Massingill

German surname Massengeil seem to have close resemblance and it is said that it might originate in Germany, but this goes way back (we're talking about the Late Medieval Ages):

Anyway, i noticed that there are more than one people that traced they're family back to Whitby, England. It is said that all Massengale and variants are from England.

Other variants that i've found are Massengell, Massenkeil and Massenkell. The latter two are mainly situated in Continental Europe.

To me the German version of the name seems either South-German or Swiss, where for example Enkell also a surname is.

My guess is: a combination of Matthew and William.
