The immigrants SELVA in USA from 1890 up to 1920 are mostlly Italians: they come especially from Northern Italy: the area of Lake COMO (50km North from MILANO) the province of UDINE in the North-East
and then from the area of BOLOGNA, namely From LIZZANO IN BELVEDERE.
Exremely rare are the Selva from Sicily. But this surname exists also in Spain and France.
SELVA could come from a nickname of a person who works as a wood-cutter or a nickname of a person that come from a place called:
Selve or Selves in France, Selva in Italy and so on.
See the French-site: www.jtosti.com/noms.

I guess, it's a variant of SILVA. But you may also check SELVAGGIO.

In SpanishIn Spanish it literally means "jungle" or similiar dense tropical or subtropical forest... Sagani's explanation of the origin of it as a name definitely has a link to it... Likewise Andy's mention of such selvatic/silvan names... I'm surprised to find it linked with toponimics

In Italy there are at least three Municipalities called Selva:

SELVA DI CADORE (near Belluno - Noth/East)

SELVA DI PROGNO (near Verona - Venice region)

SELVA DI VAL GARDENA - near Bolzano - South Tyrol).

In the past the name SELVAGGIO was not so common in Italy.

Somewhere in regional italian dialects SELVA it is also the name of a cestnut wood.

Anyhow some Italian first name are linked to the idea of a "forest":

Silvio
Silvia
Silvano.
