does anybody know what the meaning of the ln Hons is, or know of another site i may check? thanks

Search for Hons. One their Coat of Arms is a rooster. In this case the name was also spelled Hohns for a short while. The picture of the Coat of Arms can be found at:

My only guess would be that it is a variant of 'Hans', a Germanic form of John ...
In some German dialects, Hans is pronounced "hons", so this could make it more probable.
