A polish surname??
I thin that KOPERNIK is the original surname of a famous Polish scientist. But it still exists in USA and France an probably in Poland I suppose!

What could it be its origin.
Thanks for your explanations.

Ancestry.com has two explanations, that seem related:

1. occupational name for a copper miner or copper smelter, Old Polish kopernik.
2. habitational name for someone from Koperniki in Opole voivodeship, named with kopr ‘copper’

The German name of the town was Köpernick (with an O umlaut). Kopernikus' name (the famous astronomer and mathematician) is due to to the latter.
