origin of the surname IBBOTSON
Can anyone help me with the origin of the surname Ibbotson. I have read that it is related to the name Isobel but also could be linked to a 13th century English saint. Is this true?
Thank you

Means "son of Ibb", Ibb being a medieval nickname for Isabel or Hibbert. Don't know of any saints by that name. Most 13th-century people would have gone by their first name.

The earliest citation in “A Dictionary of British Surnames,” by P.H. Reaney, 2nd edition, published 1976, page 189 is :

Henry IBBOTSON, A.D. 1379.
