ISO info regarding surname Izzo
Off and on, for the past several years, I have been trying to discover the source and/or meaning of my surname of Izzo. Thus far, all I have managed to dig up is that there is an Izzo family on Malta and they have a family crest. Does anybody know more, or knows where I could look?

I thank all who respond to this thread.

The surname Izzo comes from an old medieval masculin first name ALBIZZO.
It has its origins in two provinces near NAPLES (NAPOLI): BENEVENTO an CASERTA. People who went to America left from villages By BENEVENTO and CASERTA.
You can see the name of the villages in Ellis Island pages:
www.ellisisland.org
or in the italian white pages:
www.paginebianche.it you must to tape BN (benevento) CE (Caserta) and then comune

I hope this infos are useful in spite they are late.

I suggest you take a look at this page, where a bearer of the surname (George Izzo) briefly talks about the history of his surname:

http://www.searchmalta.com/surnames/izzo/index.shtml

It's possible to contact George Izzo, therefore look at the bottom of his piece of text. He'll most likely be able to give you more information about the origin of your surname.

Also, the surname is briefly mentioned as an example on this page:

http://www.arduini.net/names/names02.htm

I shall quote what's written on that page:

"Some names reflect the appearance or behavior of the original bearers in reference to the rest of their natural world. Gallo and Galliano made their contemporaries think of roosters, Izzo and Loizzo seemed snail-like, Marinello (in somebody's opinion) resembled a ladybug, while Mussolini and Muscarella were like gnats. Fasano suggested a pheasant, and Caliendo probably sang like a lark. Colombo was associated with doves, Capra with goats, Volpe with foxes, Urso with bears and Rago with frogs. Agnello was as gentle as a lamb."

I know it's not much information, but at least we can be quite sure that your surname is of Italian origin.

I hope that helps.

Lucille

Oh, and I almost forgot.....On these pages there are links to the Izzo surname, but they turn out to be "e-mail links": you can contact the person who owns that e-mail adres about the origin of your surname.

http://members.tripod.com/pippee/anewpage2hz.html (= Gaetano, a site about Italian genealogy and surnames)

http://home.att.net/~gaetano2/I.html

Good luck with the search for the origin of your surname. Hopefully you'll add the origin to this database someday! :)
