Origin of Lekic?
Hi!
My former teacher was named Natasha Lekic, and I'm wondering about the origin of her surname. Her surname is pronounced Lekitsj. I'm pretty sure it's a Slavic surname, but from which country could it be? I don't think it could be from Russia, maybe it's from Poland, Bosnia, Croatia or something like that.
Maybe someone here knows from which country it comes?
I'd also like to know the meaning of the surname, but it's the most important that I hear from which country it could be.
Thank you in advance!
Regards,
Lucille

Hi:
My origins regarding Lekic(h)stem from my father, who was born in what is now the town of Neresine on the island of Losinj in what is now Croatia. When he was born, the island was ruled by the Austrian,/Hungarian Empire. It later became part of Italy, then Yugoslavia and now Croatia. Prior to Austria Hungey, it was ruled for hundreds of years by the Venitians. However prior to that it was a slavic area.
Some information taht I have, although not completely verified is that the Lekic's settled in Neresine in the sixteeth century and those who settled there originally came from the area that we now call Bosnia.
I have heard, and this may just be unverified fokllore, that the name of Lekic(the h was added in America to make pronunciation easier)originate from a man with one name , who was calle Leka. The ic was added to indicate that the person bearing the name of Lekkic was the son of Lek, Thus all Lekich's are sons of Lek, no matter where they now reside. Obvioulsy this needs to be researced more thoroughly. Where Leka lived I don't know. It could have been in any one of the provices that comprised the former Yugoslavia or possibly even elsewhere.
Woluld be happy to entertain any comments or questions

Funny that I should see this message.
One Lekic clan has its roots in northeastern Montenegro. They belong to Vasojevic tribe. All church records were destroyed over centuries (as indeed were the churches) by Turkish invaders, but the first use of the name can be traced to mid 19th century, to a person called Lek.
The second clan comes from central Montenegro and I am unaware the two are linked by blood lines.
In summary, Lekic family name comes from Montenegro (formerly a republic of Yugoslavia).

Alex Lekic

Moje ime je Milan Milosevic iz Zrenjanina.Moja slava je Arhandjel Mihajlo.Moja porodica vodi poreklo iz srpskog plemena Vasojevic iz Crne Gore.Interesuje me da li imate moj porodicni rodoslov, znamenja ili slicno.Unapred zahvalan.
I think it might be Serbian. As for the meaning, in serbian and slovene lek means a medicine (something that makes you better when you are sick).
hope this helps

Hi Lucille,
I don't know it exactly, but I would guess Kroatian, Serbian or Bosnian. They have got surnames like Lukic, Nikolic, Simic, Tomic, Maric, Juric etc. which are pronounced the same way (-itsj or itsh) like Lekic.

Hm I have the same name! and I don't now, but I think you live in the USA ... so the name Tomic is originally from Croatia and from the former Yugoslavia
