Surname Meaning
Hi. I'm looking for the meaning of the Russian surname 'Yashin' as in the Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin....

A similar name (YASIN) occurs on page 629 of “A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire,” by Alexander Beider, published in 1993. There is a cross-reference to YASEN on page 628, which is from the place name of a certain village.

Hello Natasha,

I don't know it exactly but I would guess that the name has something to do with the first name Yasha which is a Russian form of Jacob.

I study Russian. If you notice a lot of Russian names end in "in" and "ov". That is because names are often made out of nouns and names, and if you have a feminine noun, you add -in and if you have a masculine noun you add -ov. Whoever said that the name was probably related to the name Yasha/Yakov (Jacob) is right (as far as I can tell). Just like Lenin's name came from Lena, Yashin comes from Yasha.
Hope I helped!
