Ahern – from Ó Eachthighearna, “a horse-lord”
Coughlan – from Ó Cochláin, derived from the word cochall, meaning “hood” or “cloak”
Lenihan – from Irish Ó Leannacháin, meaning “sorrowful"
O'Malley – from Irish Ó Máille, likely from an old Celtic word maglios, “a chief”
