I heard that the last last name, Fitz, meant Bastard. Is that true? it is'non your database.

since fitz is a family name on both sides i had planned to nickname my grandson fitz----if it means bastard i had better rethink this--cheers bill in colorado

Hi Chavonne,

Fitz- in combination with a first name makes a surname meaning "son of...", Fitzgerald means "son of Gerald".

Okay thanks. I looked up somewhere else and found that same answer. It was supposedly also a name given to illegitemate children.
Especially at a time when many of the orphanages in america were predominantly Irish. I don't know how accurate that is though.
