Ranville, i believe is a town/ village in Normandy? What does the first element "Ran2 refer to?Boulard is this the same as Bollard in english? if so a strange choice of a name?

Biron comes it is a locative surname, coming from name of places.
In France at least three municipalities bear this name.
Boulard comes from an old german given name "bolohard"
Bolo i.e brother and hard "hard".This according to the Frenche site of surnames
