It sounds like a form of the given name "Gerrit" or "Geert"; these are Dutch short forms of Gerard.

According to www.behindthename.com Gerard is "...derived from the Germanic element ger "spear" combined with hard "brave, hardy"."

My guess is that your surname means son of Geurt / Gerard.

This is correct. All I can add is that Geurt is ALSO an old form of Godfried (via Geuvert), which means '(one living under the) protection of God'.
