Where does the name "Lance" come from? I have a feeling it's Scottish or English. Or is it just one of those names adopted from an everyday word?

English surname - according to Paul Reaney from an Old Germanic male given name, Lanzo. This, he states, was an informal version of some name whose first component was Land.
