well, as you can see, that name does exist in germany and in that area where I come from quite often. Whoever told you that it originally was spelled horstig was wrong. there are probably familys who spell it that way.
Anyway, I got told, its got something to do with the settlement. In my case its because the very first members of may family built their farm on a spot where eagles used to have their nests, which in german is called "horst". and that was way back somewhre betwenn 1600 and 1645 nobody knows exactly, it´s prably old-german
