I'm no expert. Having traced my AYRTON surname in Yorkshire's West Riding and East Lancashire, where they are concentrated, I have an educated guess. If you will look at the map in that area you will see the town of AIRTON on the river AIRE. Just recently, I ran across the authentic AYRTON Tartan*. Seems that that the AYRTON's came from an area just close to the southern Scottish border, which would explain, I think, the AYRTON clan's tartan. Remember, in southern Scotland lies AYR and AYRSHIRE. Be proud of the name!
