I have heard the name Morgenstern, a German name, and this is the German word for "morning star". Maybe the n got lost? Those people in Ellis Island were writing names in English by how the arriving immigrants pronounced them. Many European names were corrupted because of this.

No, the n did not get lost and the name was not corrupted. "Morgenster" is Dutch and litterally means "morning star" (I am Dutch myself). "Morgenstern" is the German variant with the same meaning. Marina
