In the fifties, the CIA experimented with hynotics, as well as other forms of mind control. A hypnotic courier was one who, under hypnosis, was given a special message. While awake, the courier knew nothing of his message, but when the receiver met the courier and said the codewords, the courier would fall asleep once more and deliver the message.
I'm not entirely certain that this is true, but I've read about it in various books and on different websites...
