Vatble
Has anyone come across the origin, history or meaning of the family name Vatble or it could have originally been Dela Vatble or de la Vatble? Thank you.

Northern French, Vatblé, "meaning obscure", says one expert, but Jean Tosti has some suggestions. If you know some French it's on this page -

If not you'll have to make do with the following -
it could mean "spoil wheat" and be a nickname for a miner. The peasantry hated miners, and, it would seem from this that they blamed them for ruining their crops. Another possibility is that it comes from a place name. Tosti lists a couple of place names that could have the same origin though they don't look too similar.

Thank you. Jim, do you perhaps know why there would be a de la or dela before a name? Is it French or perhaps Spanish or Portuguese?

De la would be the French spelling, suggesting it's from a place name. It could be an affectation, the particle "de" was indicative of noble status under the monarchy. Nowadays most people affecting the "particule" are phoneys.

Thank you. I am actually interested in Vatble of Martinique who apparently changed their name. It is proving to be quite interesting.

I am related to the Vatble's of Martinique and i am not aware of any name change having taken place. The name can currently be traced back to Amiens in France to Louis Vatble around 1708 and is the fore father of the Vatble, in France, Martinique and South Africa.
Hope this is of some help.
