Does anyone know anything about Sprague?
My mother's maiden name is Sprague, and I'd love to know what it means. I've done some light Googling, and more than one site said it came from a Dutch name/word, Spraak. However, I've been told that the Sprague side of the family was Scottish and that the name Sprague is of Scottish origin. Can anyone help me clear this up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The name does occur in Scotland but it's commoner in England, and I suspect its origins lie there. The experts agree, it comes from an older version of our modern word SPARK, and was a nickname for a bright, lively person. Other versions are Spragg, Sprake and Sprakes.
