Thanks so much for answering my previous question, but I have one more (and last) request. Can anyone help me find out the roots for the surname Torrente? Its from my mother's side, whom my grandfather says is Italian (he says my great-grandfather was from Italy, and in my region (in Brazil) he was known as the "Bloody Italian", as he was the sheriff of the town). But, everywhere I look, Torrente comes up as a Spaniard name.. so whats the deal?

Torrente is both a Spanish and an Italian surname, but seems to be more common in Spain. If you go to www.gens.labo.net and type the name in the search engine, you'll see a map of Italy showing where the name is found.
As I'm sure you're aware Spanish and Italian are both Romance languages with a vocabulary drawn from old Latin, as is Portuguese. So words can turn out the same or similar in these languages. "Field", for example is campo in both Spanish and Italian, from Latin campus.

Well, that is true. Never knew that the name could have such close correlations with two distinct nations. Thanks for the info.

If this surname comes from Italy, There are man probabilities that it comes from the province of TRAPANI, in Western Sicily. Most probobly from the municipality of FAVIGNANA, the EGADI ISLAND, now a paradise for tourists.
