Does anyone know the origin or meaning of the Polish surname Stalewski?
My American family has always softened the traditional pronunciation of the "v" sound accompanied by the letter w, resulting in something like "staa-leh-skee" as opposed to "staa-lev-skee."
I would appreciate any help that could be offered. Thanks.

It probably derives from a place called Stalewo in Northern Poland. I don't know the meaning of the place name. Polish stal means "steel", but that may be coincidence.
